Objectives : grade 6

BIBLE

  • understand that the Bible is one continuous story
  • identify biblical history as God’s redemptive work
  • understand Christ is the fulfillment of God’s promises
  • recall who wrote the Bible, why it was written, where and when it happened, and what kind of books it contains
  • recall the stories about creation, the fall, the flood, and the Tower of Babel
  • recall stories of the Patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and understand God’s covenant with them
  • understand why God chose Moses and the role he played in bringing the Israelites from slavery to the Promised Land
  • recall the nature of the covenant God made with His people at Mt. Sinai
  • remember the Ten Commandments and apply to daily life
  • recall Israel’s conquest and division of Canaan
  • identify the cycle of oppression and deliverance during the period of the Judges
  • identify reasons for God’s rejection of Saul and His choice of David
  • identify David’s ascent to the throne and recall the establishment of his kingdom through military campaigns
  • recall the story of Solomon’s rise to the throne
  • identify building and history of Solomon’s temple
  • overview of geography during the ancient and modern times
  • understand the context of biblical history in the word

MEMORY WORK

    a variety of Old and New Testament scriptures are assigned weekly

READING, LANGUAGE, SPELLING, PHONICS, HANDWRITING & WRITING PROCESS

  • view language in its entirety as a gift from God requiring careful stewardship
  • understand the unity and diversity of the various components of English (writing literature, grammar, vocabulary, and speech) in the goal of effective communication
  • appreciate different literary genres (short story, poetry, nonfiction, drama, novels)
  • critique literature through scriptural principles and teachings
  • demonstrate oral reading ability
  • read a minimum of 2,000 pages of non-text novels for personal enjoyment
  • read the novels, No Promises in the Wind, , The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Hobbit, The Westing Game, and Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry
  • prepare occasional reports on out-of-class reading
  • comprehend content vocabulary, and expand vocabulary usage and knowledge
  • understand and use basic spelling rules
  • demonstrate and use knowledge of the writing process
  • understand and apply the six writing traits in a variety of formal written assignments (personal narrative, expository, persuasive, and comparison/contrast essays, along with poems, short stories, speeches, and letters)
  • practice writing for differing audiences (teachers, classmates, parents, principals, and community figures)
  • learn the research process and apply to a major research report, using available research tools
  • use reference materials correctly
  • identify parts of speech and use them correctly in writing
  • demonstrate knowledge of sentence structure
  • use public speaking skills while presenting a memorized Bible verse or poem to the class
  • practice speaking in front of audiences

SCIENCE

  • identify God as the Creator and sustainer of our world
  • discover God as orderly and consistent
  • understand living things as plants or animals
  • understand plants’ and animals’ specific adaptations and responses in nature and simple living things

  • learn to be a responsible citizen in God’s world and to use resources wisely
