BIBLE

  • encouraged to respond in obedience to God

  • study the divided kingdom
  • study the work of Israel’s and Judah’s prophets
  • understand God’s work during the Exile
  • understand God’s plan of salvation throughout history, culminating in Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection
  • study the parables of Jesus
  • understand the parables related to their heavenly meanings
  • study the story of Christ from his birth through the escape to Egypt
  • study Jesus’ ministry: his baptism, temptation, calling of disciples, Sermon on the Mount, miracles, Great Commission, and the Transfiguration

  • understand that language is a gift from God

  • apply phonetic skills to decode words
  • recognize sight words
  • summarize stories and sequence events

Read Aloud Books

A wide variety of student selected books are read aloud to the class. Choices include age-appropriate children’s authors

MATH

  • understand God’s world as a world of order and precision
  • recall addition and subtraction facts through eighteen
  • grasp number concepts and comparisons, and object/number relationships
  • grasp the concepts of greater than and less than
  • understand skip counting by twos, threes, fours, and fives
  • recognize patterns
  • interpret graphs and graph data
  • recognize and use place value to the hundreds position
  • tell time at five minute intervals and elapsed time
  • count groups of coins to $.99
  • estimate, measure, and compare lengths using standard and non-standard units
  • add two digit numbers with and without regrouping
  • explore meaning of fractions using manipulatives
  • solve word problems using computational skills
  • collect, organize, and graph information for problem solving

SCIENCE

  • recognize that God is the creator and sustainer of everything as we study animal groups and plant parts
  • recognize and begin to understand the earth’s weather patterns and water cycle
  • understand ways to keep safe at home, at school, and in the community
  • learn about how to care for the earth and its plants and animals
  • understand that God has created each person uniquely with special talents
  • develop empathy and communication skills
  • identify healthy habits
  • understand the importance of regular exercise
  • classify foods into the five food groups

SOCIAL STUDIES

  • understand the uniqueness of each individual in God’s eyes

  • use maps and globes to compare and examine various locations
  • define and recognize the differences among continents, countries, and cities
  • know leaders of a city, state, and country
  • know what a community is, worker functions, needs/wants, products/services
  • learn the names and locations of all seven continents
  • be exposed to several different countries: climate, culture, customs, geography
  • be exposed to various careers and God’s calling in our lives
  • acquire basic knowledge of key people in American History
