1ST GRADE

  • observe nature and use God’s creation as inspiration for ideas
  • explore different art media and how they can be combined
  • practice drawing skills - observational and expressive
  • learn about color families - warm, cool, neutral, primary, secondary
  • see how artists have used art concepts and vocabulary-line and direction, tactile and visual textures, geometric and organic shapes
  • follows oral directions, working in sequential steps.

2ND GRADE

  • identifies and demonstrates different line qualities-i.e. thick/thin
  • practice the use of color families in art projects to reinforce warm, cool, neutral, primary, and secondary groups
  • explore different art media and combinations - both 2-D and 3-D-and geometric and organic shapes to create free form
  • creates space by using overlapping and relative size
  • varies pressure and placement, controls direction with tools
  • learn about art from different countries - printing objects
  • learn about artists and see how they use art concepts in their work

3RD GRADE

  • practice using color families and explore color mixing - tints and shades
  • understands and demonstrates light and dark values
  • identifies positive and negative space
  • learn about seven elements of design
  • learn how to draw a person in proportion - whole body
  • explore different art media through various projects - 2-D and 3-D
  • practice observational drawing, putting art elements into practice

4TH GRADE

  • practice observational drawing skills - especially different views
  • explore different art media through various projects - 2-D and 3-D
  • identifies and uses line to create texture, defines space using ground/horizon line
  • observe color and reproduce it using knowledge of color mixing, complementary colors, symmetry and balance
  • identifies and mixes colors, value, tint/shade, monochromatic colors
  • learn about some of the possibilities of clay

5TH GRADE

  • identifies and uses analogous color
  • creates space using foreground, middle and background
  • identifies an area of emphasis or center of interest
  • learn about perspective drawing and do a project in linear one-point perspective
  • identifies and uses balance, contour lines
  • practice observational and expressive drawing, using the technical knowledge in regards to figure and facial drawings, etc.
  • explore different art media through various projects - both 2-D and 3-D

6TH - 8TH GRADE

  • follows multi level instruction
  • develops long term projects
  • beginning understanding of and build upon the principle of organization (balance, emphasis, proportion, movement, repetition, variety, harmony) as well as elements of design (line, shape, form, value, texture, shape, color)
  • applies learned concepts, vocabulary, skills, and techniques through a creative process
  • begin to describe, analyze, interpret, and evaluate own work
  • begin to distinguish applied art skills from various artists, cultures and times
  • create textural effects by creating variations in value, combines media for visual and expressive purposes
